Peak Starpex Guitar Controller Reviews

Great guitar. Worth every penny5
This review is intended for people who are familiar with the game. I’ll skip that junk.
The guitar is definitely designed with expert players in mind. It’s wireless, but also includes a wire to play wired so no worries about batteries.
The auto-off turns off after a few minutes, but the way you tell it is on is with the nice blue glow.
The star power button works, but I still tilt a lot.
Very heavy, but you get used to it. Hard to go back.
Buttons can be a bit stiff and need to be broken in. I’ve had to sand mine down in a few corners to prevent sticking, but that’s not needed on all builds. EASY TO TAKE APART, just a lot of screws.
The whammy bar feels nice and actually isn’t free rotating. The screw-in actually stops.
No PS button. Hit start/select together to pull it up. Strum to go up/down. Hold select and strum to go left/right.
Buttons are high quality. Sliding takes a lighter grip as it’s a bit raised, but it still works fine. Solo buttons are the same size as regular so it helps out a bunch.
RB/GH switch works and there’s a PS button on the dongle, but start/select is easier.
Strum has a click and seems fairly durable in my use.
Battery life seems fine. Hasn’t gone out since I purchased months ago.
No extra lag. Works fine with auto-calib of RB2 Guitar
One of my guitar strap screws got pulled out from the weight, but I just replaced it with a slightly larger one.
The dongle is actually a wireless PS2 dongle that plugs into a USB converter for the PS3, so it’s a bit large.

Overall the build quality is top notch, but if you get a lot of use out of yours, you will need to maintain it, like any instrument or controller. Thankfully it seems like they had that in mind when constructing it.

Decent-quality, full-sized controller5
Having used this controller for about a month, now, I would have to say that it is of superior quality to the standard plastic controllers – which probably isn’t saying much. Where it shines is in the mass and feel of a real guitar. My hands would cramp up using the miniature plastic guitar controllers that come with Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but using a full sized guitar was much more comfortable. It is, however, relatively heavy compared to the plastic controllers, and I would not recommend this for younger children. The price may seem a bit on the high side, but I feel that I got my money’s worth out of this product. A little added bonus, at least in my eyes, is the inclusion of a fairly long cable for a wired connection to your console. So, I can play even if the batteries go dead or if I’m too cheap to replace the batteries.

Pros: Full size, durable, comfortable to use

Cons: Relatively heavy (compared to hollow plastic controllers), sticker shock

Excellent 3rd party guitar – I bought 2 !5
I got mine for Christmas (wife got it direct from Peak)…Starburst model (which was pretty pricey)… I liked it so much I bought one for my wife (this model from Amazon)… my wife said it best: why drive a Yugo (the standard Rockband plastic “ukulele”) when you can drive the Cadillac (Peak guitar). I love them – I highly recommend them. I will warn you – you’ll probably want a 2nd guitar for your bass player. I did notice one of the fake “string tensioners” got a little loose – a screwdriver fixed that easily (and no issues since). No missed notes on this thing, either (unlike the “ukulele’s”). The buttons are slightly farther apart than the “ukulele’s”, but you’ll get used to it immediately – in fact I like it better as it’s easier to “feel” your fingers moving between buttons. Auto-shutoff is also nice – saves batteries (we always forgot on the ukulele’s). Definitely adds to the entire Rockband/Guitar Hero experience (works with GHWT also – we have both). These are bigger guitars (true to the real thing) – geared towards adults rather than smaller kids (but, keep the “ukulele’s” for the kids – smaller for them, and you won’t worry if they get destroyed). Lastly, for PS2/3 only, so huge advantage over Xbox!
